V-Grits: All Vegan Cafe - Beargrass Thunder Food Review

Updated: Feb 21, 2021

We've had our eye on V-Grits for quite some time, and were excited for an excuse to give it a try! My fiance Nikole and I were craving some vegan southern comfort food, so we called and placed a pickup order. The employees were very nice and the service was quick; we were on our way home 10 minutes after placing our order.

Nikole ordered the Nachos Supreme ($9) and I got the Nashville Hot Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich ($13). With tip, we ended up paying around $32 total for our meals.

The French Fries that came with the chicken sandwich were the star of the show, surprisingly. They were just the right texture, and you could taste that they were authentic restaurant-grade gourmet fries rather than generic soggy and greasy fast food ones. Whatever seasoning they used really made these fries special and something we will be coming back for.

The Nachos Supreme was interesting. The queso was almost overwhelmingly smokey, but not in a bad way. Combined with the olives, tomatoes, jalapenos, and vegan taco meat, it makes for a very unique dish. It wasn't quite what we were expecting, but tasty without a doubt. If you're a fan of nachos you will probably enjoy this.

The Nashville Hot Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich is a very solid choice if you're looking for a vegan chicken sandwich. It comes with lettuce, tomatoes, vegan ranch, and pickles on a delicious brioche bun. While it's comparable to other fast food chicken sandwiches, it's not as good as certifiably legendary dishes from places like Shirley Mae's Cafe, but when you're reminded that it's not actually chicken and in fact completely vegan, it's very impressive for what it is.

This was a solid meal for both of us overall, and we're looking forward to checking out some other menu items they have to offer such as their gourmet mac n' cheese, tacos, and tofu bowls.

V-Grits is on Barrett Avenue between the Highlands and Germantown neighborhoods in Louisville. They have strong values such as social justice, racial equality, access to healthy food for all animal rights, and sustainability. If you've seen our other material you will know that this is everything Beargrass Thunder is all about, so we love seeing this.

We highly recommend this restaurant, and we don't doubt it's potential to inspire people to give it a shot going vegan!
