Successful Seed Giveaway brings community together to increase biodiversity around Beargrass Creek

Beargrass Thunder's first official event (and first of many seed giveaways) was a huge success! We gave away hundreds of seeds to community members who stopped by our booth in Logan Street Market.

We were proud to offer a huge variety of seeds, all of which were Kentucky-native! Small envelopes containing a "surprise mix" of around ten seeds were handed out to anyone who were interested, from small children to senior citizens. Many requests for specific types of seeds were also able to be fulfilled!

A big thank you to everyone who came out to participate. We loved meeting new people and hearing some amazing stories in the process. For those of you who are just now joining us - welcome! We're in the process of planning more seed giveaways and seed swaps, so be sure you're signed up for our mailing list at the bottom of the page and following on social media so you don't miss important info.

Beargrass Thunder is organizing a seed bank program! The idea is to store all kinds of Kentucky-native seeds and have them accessible to community members. We are searching for anyone who would like to volunteer in any capacity. This is meant to be a community-run project, and we want to do everything we can to help get it off the ground. Like the Louisville Seedbank Project facebook page and join the Louisville Seedbank Friends group to learn how you can help!

We had such a great time making all kinds of new friends giving away these seeds. We were expecting to have plenty of leftovers, but to our surprise - every single seed packet was given out by the time we were packing up!

"It was hard work putting this together, but it was definitely worth it! It feels good knowing hundreds of Kentucky-native seeds are going into the ground because of this."

-Jody Dahmer, co-owner

"It left me excited for what's to come! I think we can do this on a much larger scale."

-Nikole Thomas, Executive Assistant

Beargrass Thunder is excited to move forward and continue with these projects, so stay tuned!
